Consistent relationship between global climate and surface nitrate utilization in the western subarctic Pacific throughout the last 500 ka ArchiMer
Galbraith, Eric D.; Kienast, Markus; Jaccard, Samuel L.; Pedersen, Thomas F.; Brunelle, Brigitte G.; Sigman, Daniel M.; Kiefer, Thorsten.
[1] The open subarctic Pacific is, at present, a high nitrate low chlorophyll (HNLC) region, where nitrate is perennially abundant at the surface. Theoretically, the HNLC status of this region is subject to modification by ocean circulation and/or micronutrient supply, with implications for the effectiveness of the biological pump and hence carbon sequestration in the ocean interior. Records of biogenic detritus in sediments from throughout the subarctic Pacific indicate that export production was generally lower during glacial maxima, while nitrogen isotope measurements from the Bering Sea have shown that nitrate consumption there was more complete during the last glacial period than it is today. Here, nitrogen isotopic analyses of bulk sediments (delta...

Deglacial nitrogen isotope changes in the Gulf of Mexico: Evidence from bulk sedimentary and foraminifera-bound nitrogen in Orca Basin sediments ArchiMer
Meckler, A. Nele; Ren, Haojia; Sigman, Daniel M.; Gruber, Nicolas; Plessen, Birgit; Schubert, Carsten J.; Haug, Gerald H..
Constraining variations in marine N(2)-fixation over glacial-interglacial timescales is crucial for determining the role of the marine nitrogen cycle in modifying ocean productivity and climate, yet paleo-records from N2-fixation regions are sparse. Here we present new nitrogen isotope (delta(15)N) records of bulk sediment and foraminifera test-bound (FB) nitrogen extending back to the last ice age from the oligotrophic Gulf of Mexico (GOM). Previous studies indicate a substantial terrestrial input during the last ice age and early deglacial, for which we attempt to correct the bulk sediment delta(15)N using its observed relationship with the C/N ratio. Both corrected bulk and FB-delta(15)N reveal a substantial glacial-to-Holocene decrease of delta(15)N...

Detailed sedimentary N isotope records from Cariaco Basin for terminations I and V: Local and global implications ArchiMer
Meckler, A. Nele; Haug, Gerald H.; Sigman, Daniel M.; Plessen, Birgit; Peterson, Larry C.; Thierstein, Hans R..
For the last deglaciation and Termination V ( the initiation of MIS 11 at around 430 ka) we report high-resolution sedimentary nitrogen isotope (delta(15)N)records from Cariaco Basin in the Caribbean Sea. During both terminations the previously reported interglacial decrease in delta(15)N clearly lags local changes such as water column anoxia as well as global increases in denitrification by several thousand years. On top of the glacial-interglacial change, several delta(15)N peaks were observed during the last deglaciation. The deglacial signal in Cariaco Basin can be best explained as a combination of (1) local variations in suboxia and water column denitrification as the reason for the millennial-scale peaks, (2) a deglacial maximum in mean ocean...

Elevated foraminifera-bound nitrogen isotopic composition during the last ice age in the South China Sea and its global and regional implications ArchiMer
Ren, Haojia; Sigman, Daniel M.; Chen, Min-te; Kao, Shuh-ji.
We report a new foraminifera-bound delta N-15 (FB-delta N-15) record from the South China Sea (SCS) extending back to 42 ka. This record shows a similar to 1.2 parts per thousand glacial-to-interglacial delta N-15 decrease, with a deglacial delta N-15 maximum similar to that observed in many bulk sedimentary delta N-15 records and in a Caribbean FB-delta N-15 record. The glacial-to-interglacial delta N-15 decrease is smaller than in the Caribbean record, indicating that at least half of the Caribbean delta N-15 decrease into the Holocene was regional, not global, supporting the interpretation of a Holocene increase in Atlantic nitrogen fixation. At the same time, the glacial-to-interglacial delta N-15 decrease observed in the SCS may also be explained as a...

Links between tropical rainfall and North Atlantic climate during the last glacial period ArchiMer
Deplazes, Gaudenz; Lueckge, Andreas; Peterson, Larry C.; Timmermann, Axel; Hamann, Yvonne; Hughen, Konrad A.; Roehl, Ursula; Laj, Carlo; Cane, Mark A.; Sigman, Daniel M.; Haug, Gerald H..
During the last glacial period, the North Atlantic region experienced pronounced, millennial-scale alternations between cold, stadial conditions and milder interstadial conditions-commonly referred to as Dansgaard-Oeschger oscillations-as well as periods of massive iceberg discharge known as Heinrich events(1). Changes in Northern Hemisphere temperature, as recorded in Greenland(2-4), are thought to have affected the location of the Atlantic intertropical convergence zone(5,6) and the strength of the Indian summer monsoon(7,8). Here we use high-resolution records of sediment colour-a measure of terrigenous versus biogenic content-from the Cariaco Basin off the coast of Venezuela and the Arabian Sea to assess teleconnections with the North Atlantic climate...

The GEOTRACES Intermediate Data Product 2014 (IDP2014) is the first publicly available data product of the international GEOTRACES programme, and contains data measured and quality controlled before the end of 2013. It consists of two parts: (1) a compilation of digital data for more than 200 trace elements and isotopes (TEls) as well as classical hydrographic parameters, and (2) the eGEOTRACES Electronic Atlas providing a strongly inter-linked on-line atlas including more than 300 section plots and 90 animated 3D scenes. The IDP2014 covers the Atlantic, Arctic, and Indian oceans, exhibiting highest data density in the Atlantic. The TEI data in the IDP2014 are quality controlled by careful assessment of intercalibration results and multi-laboratory data...

The new IDP2017 is a significant improvement over the earlier IDP2014 and roughly doubles the number of included cruises, stations, samples and parameters. The IDP2017 is a truly international product containing data from 326 researchers from 25 countries. The IDP2017 provides data for the Pacific Ocean, and the Mediterranean and Black seas, in addition to Atlantic, Arctic and Indian Oceans that were already represented in the previous data product. For the first time, the IDP2017 contains significant amounts of biogeochemistry data as well as TEI data for aerosols and rain. As before, users can obtain complete IDP2017 data sets as bulk downloads. Alternatively, there is now a customisable online data extraction service that allows data selections by...
